The support for families

If you have a family member suffering from an eating disorder, it is important that you take good care of yourself. When you are able to look after yourself, you are more likely to be able to support your loved ones with an eating disorder in the long run. The following are some suggestions for you to get extra support and to promote your health while struggling with the stress and different emotions associated with supporting a family member with eating disorders:
   
  • Keep in touch with close friends and relatives who you can talk to regularly and discuss your concerns
  • Encourage each member in the family to talk openly about his / her feelings about the family situation which can bring the family closer together
  • Attend family support groups which would enable you to share your experiences and obtain mutual support from people going through the same situation
  • Participate in family relationship counseling or family therapy when required
  • Maintain your normal activities and make time for yourself and other family members
  • Engage in enjoyable activities that would take the mind off the eating disorder, don't feel guilty about enjoying life
  • Try to keep your sense of humor
  • Learn effective strategies to deal with your stress
